The words "root canal" can make people nervous, but modern root canal treatment is a routine procedure that relieves pain and saves teeth. Most patients tell us it feels much like getting a filling.

Inside every tooth is a soft center called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack, or an injury allows bacteria to reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. This may cause severe toothache, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting, swelling in the gums, or a darkening of the tooth. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the problem is found on an X-ray. Left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to an abscess or loss of the tooth.

During a root canal, we numb the area so you stay comfortable. We then gently remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent reinfection. Most root canal teeth then need a crown to protect them and restore full strength for chewing, and we'll go over that plan with you before you leave.

The benefit is real: root canal treatment lets you keep your natural tooth, which is usually the best option for your bite, your appearance, and your long-term oral health. It's also often more comfortable than living with the infection, and pain relief typically begins soon after treatment.

We always do our best to save your natural teeth, but sometimes removing a tooth is the healthiest choice.

There are several reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Common ones include severe decay or damage that can't be repaired, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, an infection, a broken tooth, a tooth that is impacted or blocking others from coming in properly, or crowding that needs to be corrected before orthodontic treatment. 

Wisdom teeth are also commonly removed when they cause pain, infection, or problems for neighboring teeth.

Before your extraction, we take X-rays and review your health history so we can plan your care carefully. We numb the area thoroughly so you feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. A simple extraction of a tooth that is visible above the gumline is often quick. A surgical extraction, for a tooth that is broken, impacted, or has curved roots, may involve a small incision in the gum, and sometimes we will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for more complex cases.

Afterward, we'll give you clear, written instructions for healing, including how to manage discomfort, what to eat, and what to avoid so a blood clot can form and protect the area. Most people feel back to normal within a few days, and we're always here if you have questions during recovery.

Sealants are one of the simplest ways to protect teeth from cavities, especially for CHILDREN + TEENS. 

A sealant is a thin, protective coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where cavities most often start.

The back teeth have deep grooves and pits that trap food and bacteria, and those tiny spaces are hard to clean, even with careful brushing. A sealant fills in those grooves and creates a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that helps keep decay out.

Getting sealants is quick and comfortable. There's no drilling and no shots. We clean and dry the tooth, apply a gentle solution to help the sealant bond, then brush on the sealant and harden it with a special light. The whole process usually takes just a few minutes per tooth, and you can eat normally right afterward.

Sealants are most often placed on children's and teens' permanent molars soon after they come in, when cavity risk is highest. Adults can benefit too, particularly if their teeth have deep grooves and no existing fillings. We'll check your teeth and let you know whether sealants make sense for you or your child.

Oral cancer screening is a quick, painless part of your regular dental exam, and it can make a life-saving difference. 

Like many cancers, oral cancer is much easier to treat when it is found early, and your dental visit is one of the best opportunities to catch it.

During your screening, your dentist carefully looks at and feels the areas of your mouth and neck where changes can appear. This includes your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat. We look for anything unusual, such as sores that don't heal, red or white patches, lumps or thickened areas, or changes in color or texture. The exam takes only a few minutes and involves no needles or discomfort.

Anyone can develop oral cancer, but the risk is higher for people who use tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, or drink alcohol regularly. HPV infection and significant sun exposure to the lips are also risk factors, and the disease can occur in people with none of these. 

That's why we screen all of our adult patients at regular exams.

Between visits, you can watch for warning signs, including a sore or ulcer that hasn't healed in two weeks, persistent mouth or throat pain, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a lump in the mouth or neck, numbness, or a change in your voice or bite.
